Structured pathology reporting of cancer (SPRC) protocols
The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) continues to advance the quality and consistency of cancer reporting through its structured pathology reporting of cancer (SPRC) project. The project’s overarching goal is to deliver the most accurate and comprehensive diagnostic information to support optimal patient care and outcomes.
The RCPA is developing new SPRC protocol templates for tumours of the central nervous system, bone and soft tissue, bone marrow as well as upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopic resection specimens. These evidence-based and peer-reviewed cancer reporting templates promote best practice pathology reporting aligned with the latest international recommendations.
Cancer guidelines and recommendations
Earlier this year, the RCPA published the HER2 Testing in Breast Cancer Guidelines and the Molecular Testing of Lung Cancer Recommendations in Australia, providing clear, up-to-date guidance for molecular diagnostics. Lung cancer is also the focus of RCPA’s International Pathology Day event this year, taking place on 5 November 2025.
Through ongoing collaboration with government and non-government organisations across Australia, the RCPA is also working to support existing initiatives and develop new resources to support highest quality cancer reporting data.
Pathology Update, RCPA's annual scientific meeting
Preparations are well underway for Pathology Update 2026, the RCPA’s annual scientific meeting, which takes place in Sydney on 6-8 March 2026. This multidisciplinary event brings together leading experts and emerging voices from across the globe to explore new ideas, share insights and celebrate innovation in pathology.
Under the theme 'Many Paths, Shared Focus, Stronger Together', Pathology Update 2026 will mark the RCPA’s 70th anniversary, a milestone celebration of collaboration and progress in the world of pathology.
Applications are still open for e-poster submissions and student and junior doctor grants.
