World Radiotherapy Awareness Day – 7 September

world radiotherapy awareness day 7 september 2025September 7 marks World Radiotherapy Awareness Day (WRAD), a global celebration of the life-saving role of radiotherapy in healthcare.

RANZCR is proud to support WRAD, shining a light on how radiation is used safely, effectively, and innovatively in medicine. It is also a day to recognise the skill, dedication, and collaboration of the radiation oncology workforce, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and countless others whose expertise ensures patients receive the highest quality care. WRAD is not just about celebration, it is also about advocacy. Around the world, and even in parts of our own region, access to safe and effective radiation services is still limited. By marking this day, we raise awareness of the need for equitable access to radiation technologies, skilled professionals, and quality-assured services for every patient, no matter where they live.

This year, we encourage everyone in the cancer care community to join the conversation, share the message, and help highlight the critical role radiation plays in modern medicine. Whether you attend an event, share stories online, or simply spark discussions in your workplace, your voice helps amplify the impact of WRAD.

APROSIG – Strengthening Radiation Oncology Across the Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific Radiation Oncology Special Interest Group (APROSIG) is a RANZCR special interest group dedicated to improving access to safe, effective, and sustainable radiation therapy across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in our region. Our mission extends well beyond the delivery of equipment, we work to strengthen every link in the chain of cancer care: ensuring there are trained staff, robust clinical standards, and strong quality assurance processes so that patients receive the highest standard of treatment, no matter where they live.

Collaboration is central to our approach. APROSIG works closely with multidisciplinary partners, including the Asia-Pacific Special Interest Group of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM), the Global Medical Radiation Practitioner Reference Group of the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT), COSA’s Global Oncology Group, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These partnerships bring together radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and other allied professionals to share knowledge, resources, and practical solutions.

Our members have supported colleagues in Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, Mongolia, and Vietnam through targeted short-term educational visits, longer volunteer placements, and virtual peer review initiatives such as ASPRONET. We also facilitate inbound visits, enabling LMIC colleagues to experience the systems, workflows, and innovations in Australian and New Zealand radiation oncology centres, building capacity and fostering lasting professional relationships.

Beyond clinical support, APROSIG contributes to system-level improvements through participation in IAEA service assessments in PNG, Fiji, and Cambodia, and by leading IAEA Technical Cooperation projects. Recent initiatives include assisting member states in optimising departmental Oncology Information Systems to capture and interpret data for quality improvement purposes.

APROSIG is a community built on shared expertise, mutual respect, and a commitment to equity in cancer care. New members, whether RANZCR Fellows, trainees, or other professionals in the cancer care space — are always welcome. Contact [email protected] to join our network or learn more about our work.
