Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group

During 2022, ANZUP re-commenced face-to-face meetings, including our ASM which was held in Adelaide in July. It was great to see people back together after a few years of meeting virtually.

The latter half of 2022 is proving to be another busy time at ANZUP. We are holding a number of events, including the Best of GU, Prostate cancer Rapid Fire Program and the return of our Sydney Below the Belt Pedalthon.

Best of GU Oncology Evening Symposium

9 November, Pullman Melbourne on the Park
The Best of GU Evening Symposium is a collaboration between ANZUP and the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ). It features highlights from the ANZUP ASM, including the latest management, and clinical trials research in urogenital and prostate cancers.

The Symposium takes advantage of a smaller meeting, allowing networking in a friendly but focused environment. The program is structured to facilitate both audience participation and discussion.

Prostate Cancer Rapid Fire Program

18-19 November 2022, Hyatt Regency Sydney
The ANZUP Prostate Cancer Rapid Fire is a multidisciplinary educational program. It has been developed to facilitate further understanding of contemporary oncology management through advances in clinical trials and will cover landmark clinical trials in prostate cancer, whilst providing mentorship from experts in the field. The program has been designed to offer trainees and junior consultants’ insight into the evolution of prostate cancer management and evidence behind contemporary clinical practice.

Applications are now open (and you must be an ANZUP member to attend). Places are limited and expected to fill quickly, and applications will close Tuesday 20 September 2022. The return of the Sydney Below the Belt Pedalthon

The Below the Belt Pedalthon was founded in 2013 to increase awareness of below the belt (testicular, prostate, bladder, penile and kidney) cancers and raise vital funds to improve the lives of so many patients through clinical trials research.

Whether you are an avid cyclist, new to the sport or just looking for a challenge, we invite you to ride to help those living with cancer. The Pedalthon promises to provide a unique event to network with the community, promoting teamwork, healthy competition, plus some fun.

Every cent raised by the Pedalthon goes directly towards clinical trial research to improve the lives of the 33,135 Australian men and women diagnosed with testicular, prostate, kidney, penile or bladder cancer this year.

Recent highlights

ANZUP’s trial portfolio continues to grow. We currently have eight ANZUP-led and two co-badged trials in recruitment, as well as 11 in follow-up. You can read more about our trials on our website here.

ASCO 2022 Annual Meeting – June 2022

In June 2022 at the ASCO Annual Meeting, ANZUP featured with two oral presentations (ENZAMET and TheraP), and two posters presented (DASL-HiCaP and UNISoN).

ANZUP’s Chair Professor Ian Davis presented the updated results from ANZUP's ENZAMET (ANZUP 1304) trial which showed a 30% survival benefit. You can read more in the media release here.

Study PI Professor Michael Hofman presented the three-year results from ANZUP's TheraP (ANZUP 1603) trial, the first randomised trial comparing Lutetium-177 PSMA-617 to standard of care chemotherapy. You can read more in the media release here.

ANZUP trials continue to recruit or have recently completed recruitment, and we have several trials in development.

#ANZUP22 ASM

The ANZUP ASM was held in Adelaide in July. This year’s ASM theme No Longer on Mute: Patients, Carers and Our Research Community provided a platform to discuss the need for a voice for many groups – the patient, carers, vulnerable communities, other disciplines, and the research community – about clinical trials. It was thrilling to be able to finally come together face-to-face and network, re-ignite old friendships, debate, discuss and appreciate the multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals in attendance.

Throughout the three day meeting, delegates had the opportunity to interact with and learn from four international experts and numerous national leaders in the research, diagnosis, treatment, and management of GU cancers, always with the collegial spirit that defines ANZUP.

We were fortunate to have more than 80 speakers, panellists, session chairs and poster presenters, including a stellar international faculty: Himisha Beltran, Noel Clarke, Christopher Sweeney, Andrew Loblaw, Bertrand Tombal, Samra Turajlic, and Susanne Vahr Lauridsen.

Our 2023 ASM is being held in Melbourne in July 2023 with the convening committee, ably led by Associate Professor Ben Tran. Our theme for 2023 is Bouncing Back. We look forward to seeing you in Melbourne!

2022 Annual Report

Our ANZUP 2022 Annual Report was released in July, reflecting on our activities and achievements of the past year. The report is a great showcase of the tireless commitment of our members, supporters and wider ANZUP community to improve outcomes for genitourinary cancer patients. You can read the report online.

Our membership base is now over 2,050, and these healthcare professionals all take time out of their busy work and personal lives to help support ANZUP and make a difference to the lives of people affected by GU cancers.

We are always grateful to our dedicated and committed membership for their ongoing support and contributions to ANZUP.
