Research: Cancer survivors unaware they can seek flexible hours: study

15 Mar 2021 - Research

Employees with cancer want access to flexible work arrangements – such as part-time or remote work – when they are able to return to their duties, but many are unaware they have the right to request this. A Macquarie Business School lecturer who studied the return-to-work experiences of Australian women who had survived breast cancer found some employers had a rigid set of entitlements, and would only offer enough flexibility to meet the minimum legal obligation. Dr Senia Kalfa’s study, co-authored by two UK university peers, was published last year in the Journal of Work, Employment and Society. Dr Kalfa says it is not enough for employers to stick to basic return-to-work practices, and they must consider the individual needs of their employees.
