Medical and Scientific: Prostate surgeries excessive

15 Mar 2021 - Medical and Scientific

Thousands of prostate cancer patients are undergoing radical surgery without having consultations to give them the option of radiotherapy with less severe side effects. A new analysis of the way prostate cancer is treated in Australia has prompted doctors to call for an overhaul of health policies to ensure men are given consideration of the full range of treatments available to them. The study of 4003 NSW prostate cancer patients, to be published in the Medical Journal of Australia, found they were twice as likely to undergo radical prostatectomy than have external beam radiotherapy — with less than one in seven consulting a radiation oncologist before going into surgery. While the survival rates for surgery and radiotherapy are similar for low-risk prostate cancer, they have dramatically different side effects.
