Medical and Scientific: Breast cancer breakthrough

31 Mar 2021 - Medical and Scientific

Perth researchers have discovered the cause of one of the deadliest forms of breast cancer in a breakthrough that could save thousands of lives. Researchers sought to identify why a sub-group of hormone sensitive breast cancers were particularly aggressive and had a poor survival rate. They discovered those cancers had extra copies of a particular gene, which created a cancer-driving protein known as AAMDC. The discovery was led by researcher Pilar Blancafort, from the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and University of WA, and her team with the findings published in Nature Communications.
