Tobacco: Iso turns Americans back to cigarettes

01 Feb 2021 - Alcohol & Tobacco

Altria Group, the company that owns Marlboro, says that decades of annual declines in cigarette sales came to an abrupt halt last year. Sales that were expected to fall by 4 to 6 per cent instead levelled off in 2020, the company’s figures show this week. The change was blamed on the pandemic, which kept many Americans at home with money they were not spending on eating out, travel or petrol. The figures were also put down to the stress induced by widespread lay-offs. “People are feeling stressed, people are feeling lonely, people are feeling bored,” Vaughan Rees, director of the Global Centre for Tobacco Control at Harvard University, said.
