Medical and Scientific: Pancreatic cancer find

18 Feb 2021 - Medical and Scientific

Researchers at UniSA have found a way to detect and target pancreatic cancer before it is too late. UniSA PhD candidate Ashleigh Hull is investigating whether a receptor commonly found on the surface of pancreatic cancer cells may serve as a “biological beacon” for targeted treatment. “In our study, we found that is overexpressed on pancreatic cancer tissues, but it is minimally expressed on normal pancreatic tissue,” she said yesterday. Supervisor Professor Eva Bezak believes the receptor — called MUC1-CE — could also be used as the target for a lethal dose of radiation using a substance called a radioimmunoconjugate.
