Medical and Scientific: Boost for cancer therapies

Melbourne scientists are being backed to find the next generation of cancer breakthroughs. A project to gene-engineer a patient’s own immune cells so they turn against breast, lung and ovarian tumours is among 21 medical programs to share in a $10m cancer research boost. The latest round of Victorian Cancer Agency grants, to be announced by Health Minister Martin Foley on Thursday, also includes funding to identify more genetic risk factors for cancer and potential new treatments for ovarian cancer. Mr Foley said funding would back the state’s best and brightest researchers to discover new breakthroughs in cancer prevention, treatment and care.
