Medical and Scientific: Bladder cancer treatment boost

03 Feb 2021 - Medical and Scientific

People with bladder cancer who receive a shorter, more intense course of radiotherapy have a lower risk of the disease returning, research has found. The shorter course should be adopted as the new standard of care, experts said, particularly because it involves fewer hospital visits and therefore also reduces coronavirus risks. The study looked at people with bladder cancer that had invaded surrounding muscles. Those who had a 20-dose radiotherapy course over four weeks had a 29 per cent lower risk of cancer returning within five years than those receiving a 32-dose course delivered over 6½ weeks.
