Public Health: Cancer survival among world’s best

10 Jan 2020 - Public Health

While the fall in cancer death rates in the US is making headlines across the world, Australia has quietly been doing just as well and, in some cancers, doing even better because of its universal healthcare system. Professor Sanchia Aranda, chief executive of Cancer Council Australia, said the comparison between the two countries was not exact because the way data was collected in the US left gaps in lower socio-economic groups. ‘‘But international cancer benchmarking shows cancer survival in Australia is among the best in the world’’ Professor Sanchia Aranda said. Australia has the highest survival rate for breast and prostate cancer and advances in treatments for melanoma and lung cancer have lowered mortality rates.
